The expanded Hard Light is organized as six miniature selected-poem sequences. Laurence Edward Innes moves from live oak and canyon trail through desert night, poinsettia color, and comic domestic verse. Dorothea Hoaglin Hayden's six poems repeatedly transform weather and light: wind becomes wild horses, night becomes civic mercy, snow becomes protection, and jacaranda becomes suspended color. Mamie Downard Peck and Orlando W. Kinne provide sharper formal contrasts, pairing free-verse nocturnal terror with two tightly argued sonnets. The book's center is L. Sandra Deeth's eight-poem Mojave and Death Valley sequence, where mirage, Joshua trees, dry lake, abandoned mine, dunes, and heat shift between observation, refrain, and personification. Madeleine Ruthven closes with a ballad of near collision and an architectural elegy for the Chrysler Building. Brief appreciations identify the formal hinge of each selection, while source notes document the local witnesses. This edition complements, rather than supersedes, the sixteen-poem version in scope and emphasis.
