Extremes and Moderations: A Historical Archive of Los Angeles and Southern California Poetry

THE TEXT/TECH PAPERS

The sixteen-poem Hard Light opens with four tightly different kinds of pressure in Helen Hunt Jackson: railroad danger, historical endurance, sacrificial ritual, and an autumn lyric. Hamlin Garland's Mississippi poem shifts the scale toward labor and river travel; Madge Morris answers with desert heat and the agricultural abundance of the San Joaquin. The middle of the book pairs Laurence Edward Innes's nocturnal and desert landscapes with Dorothea Hoaglin Hayden's sustained wind metaphor and parable of a missed garden. Mary Austin's "A Song in Depression" interrupts the landscape sequence with economic unease. L. Sandra Deeth then builds the desert through refrains and visual states, before Madeleine Ruthven closes on a mountain-road near accident and the Chrysler Building's compromised grandeur. Each poem is followed by a short editorial appreciation concerned with a particular formal decision—ballad pace, metaphor, refrain, palette, or turn. The resulting selection is compact but not miscellaneous: danger, hard light, work, and unstable monumentality recur across eight distinct voices.
