Compiled by Verse Writers' Club of Southern California
The Verse Writers' Club of Southern California described this 1923-1924 anthology as the product of a critic-led process: poems were presented at regular meetings, and roughly one fifth were selected for print. That procedure produces a book alert to both public occasion and compact lyric craft. Grace Atherton Dennen moves from harbor traffic and domestic change to the comic "Widow Barker Votes"; Ben Field writes of Los Angeles, oil, the Salton Sea, France, and Jeanne d'Arc; Ethelean Tyson Gaw alternates desert landscape with love song and classical allusion. Elsewhere, tanka, sonnets, ballades, fables, epitaphs, garden sequences, ekphrastic poems, and dialect pieces share the same run of pages. The foreword also identifies the club as one source of The Lyric West, while the acknowledgments map poems to Western magazines and newspapers. Presented below in original reading order, the full contents show how contributors recur across the volume rather than reducing them to alphabetical name groups. Reader-PDF pages point directly to the reset poems.
