1930Poetry AnthologyCalifornia Poetry Anthologies

Prepared for the University of Southern California's fiftieth anniversary, this 1930 collection prints ninety-six poems by thirty-three current and former students. Its editors call the selection necessarily incomplete, but the arrangement gives several poets room to develop sequences. Carlyle F. MacIntyre moves from Michelangelo and Milan to family memory and comic domestic narrative; Ethelean Tyson Gaw sets a Barnegat song beside desert and Los Angeles weather; Norma Miller's nocturnes and river songs lead toward music and Sabbath observance. Short lyrics, sonnets, dramatic monologues, historical scenes, chinoiserie, classical subjects, elegies, and free verse repeatedly cross paths. The original acknowledgments locate many poems in The Lyric West, The Parchment, The Wooden Horse, newspapers, and national magazines, making the volume a record of campus writing connected to wider small-press networks. A biographical index restores the contributors' university affiliations. This reading edition follows the original poet sequence, preserves supported formal features, and supplies the first reader-PDF page for every poem, foreword, index, and editorial note.

Edition note

The complete anthology was reset from two independent scans. The correction pass repaired demonstrable OCR substitutions, false punctuation, running-header intrusions, scan-edge damage, and typographical line wraps while retaining meaningful indentation, stanza breaks, historical spelling, and supported printing quirks. Original printed poetry page numbers are shown throughout. The cover uses cardinal and gold, five expanding rings for the university’s first five decades, and an abstract colonnade without reproducing the university seal. The source scans remain private editorial evidence and are not part of the public upload.

Source note

All 96 poem titles, credited poets, and first reader-PDF pages were checked against the linked bookmark tree in the 98-page reading edition; front matter, biographical index, and text note are included.
